What this test is for
The Shellfish Allergy Blood Test measures total IgE and specific IgE antibodies to eight types of shellfish. IgE is the antibody linked to allergic reactions. It covers crustaceans including prawns and shrimp, crab, lobster and crayfish, and molluscs including clam, scallop, squid and octopus.
It suits people who get itching, swelling, a rash or an upset stomach after eating seafood and want to know which types may be involved. If you have ever had throat swelling or trouble breathing after food, see your GP or an allergy clinic as well.
An allergy blood test shows sensitisation, which is not the same as a confirmed allergy. Your report gives a level for each shellfish, and results should be read with your history by a clinician. Some people show sensitisation to several shellfish because their proteins are alike.
