What this test is for
The Antibiotic Allergy Blood Test measures total IgE and specific IgE antibodies to five antibiotics. It covers the penicillins amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin G and penicillin V, and cefaclor, a related antibiotic. IgE is the antibody involved in fast allergic reactions such as hives or swelling.
People who had a rash or other reaction to an antibiotic in the past often want more information to take to a clinician. It does not replace a formal allergy assessment.
You will see total IgE and a separate level for each antibiotic. An allergy blood test shows sensitisation, which is not the same as having an allergy, and a negative result does not mean an antibiotic is safe for you. Results should be read with your history by a clinician, so never take an antibiotic you have reacted to without medical advice.
