What this test is for
The Cereal Allergy Blood Test looks at six grains: wheat, spelt, barley, rye, oat and maize (corn). It measures total IgE, the overall level of allergy antibodies in your blood. It also measures specific IgE antibodies to each cereal.
It suits people who notice itching, hives, swelling or tummy upset after eating bread, pasta, breakfast cereals or other grain foods. It is not a coeliac test, as coeliac blood tests measure different antibodies.
Your report shows a level for each cereal. An allergy blood test shows sensitisation, meaning your immune system has made antibodies to a food. This is not the same as a confirmed allergy. Results should be read with your history by a clinician, who can suggest next steps.
