Prolactin Blood Test

What this test is for
The Prolactin Blood Test measures prolactin, a hormone made by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain. Its main job is to drive breast milk production, but it also affects periods, sperm production and sex drive.
Irregular or missed periods, or milky discharge when not breastfeeding, are common reasons women choose it. Men with low libido or fertility questions use it too. It also suits anyone asked by a clinician to keep an eye on their level, and a finger prick kit is available.
Stress, poor sleep, exercise and some medicines can raise prolactin for a short time, so a calm morning sample is best. Your report shows your level against the reference range. A raised result often leads to a repeat test and a talk with your GP.
