Progesterone Blood Test

What this test is for
The Progesterone Blood Test measures progesterone, a hormone made mainly by the ovary after an egg is released. Levels climb in the second half of the cycle to prepare the womb lining, then fall if there is no pregnancy.
Women trying for a baby often use it to get a picture of ovulation. It also suits women with irregular or heavy periods, or those tracking their cycle for other reasons. You can use a finger prick kit at home, book a nurse visit or come to our Hull clinic.
Timing matters most, so take your sample about seven days before your next period is due. Your report shows your level against the reference range, and a higher level at that point usually fits with ovulation. A low level can prompt a repeat test in another cycle or a talk with your GP.
