What this test is for
The Pregnancy Blood Test measures human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), a hormone made by the placenta once an embryo settles in the womb. Unlike a home urine stick, it gives a number, so it shows how much hCG is in your blood.
It suits women who want a clear measured level, or who have had unclear home test results. It can also help women tracking early pregnancy alongside their GP or fertility clinic. Samples are taken in our Hull clinic, at a nurse visit or with a home kit.
Your report shows your hCG level against the reference range. In early pregnancy the level usually rises quickly, so two tests a few days apart can show how it is changing. Talk through any result with your GP or midwife, and contact them straight away if you have pain or bleeding.
