What this test is for
The Perimenopause Hormone Check measures FSH, LH and oestradiol, the hormones that shift as the ovaries slow down. It also includes TSH and free T4, because thyroid changes can cause similar symptoms such as tiredness and low mood.
It is designed for women aged 40 to 45 who notice irregular periods, hot flushes, poor sleep or mood changes. In line with NICE guidance, hormone levels are not used to work out menopause status in women over 45. You can use a finger prick kit at home or visit our Hull clinic.
FSH can rise and fall from month to month around this time, so one result is a snapshot rather than a final answer. Your report shows each level against its reference range. A result outside the range, or symptoms that carry on, can prompt a talk with your GP about your options.
