What this test is for
The Oestradiol, Progesterone and Prolactin Blood Test measures three hormones that shape your cycle. Oestradiol is the main form of oestrogen, and progesterone rises after an egg is released. Prolactin is the hormone that drives breast milk, and high levels can upset periods.
It suits women with irregular or missed periods, and those trying for a baby who want a picture of ovulation. Unlike our Oestrogen, Progesterone and Testosterone Profile, it includes prolactin in place of testosterone. You can use a finger prick kit at home or visit our Hull clinic.
Take your sample about a week before your next period is due, as progesterone depends on timing. Your report shows each level against its reference range. A result outside the range can prompt a repeat test or a talk with your GP.
