What this test is for
The Male Fertility Check is a hormone blood test covering six markers linked to sperm production. It measures total testosterone, prolactin, and LH and FSH, the hormones that signal the testes. SHBG, a protein that carries testosterone, and the free androgen index show how much testosterone is available to the body.
Men planning a family, couples who have been trying for a while, and men with low energy or low sex drive often book it. It does not look at sperm itself, which needs a separate semen analysis. A finger prick kit is available.
Testosterone peaks in the morning, so an early sample gives the clearest reading. Each hormone is set against its reference range. A result outside it can prompt a repeat test, a look at sleep, weight and alcohol, or a talk with your GP or fertility clinic.
