What this test is for
This dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blood test measures one hormone. DHT is made from testosterone in the skin, hair roots and prostate. It acts more strongly than testosterone on hair growth, skin and the prostate.
Men noticing thinning hair at the crown or temples sometimes want to see their DHT level. Women with acne or extra facial or body hair may check it alongside other androgens, the male type hormones both sexes make. It also suits people whose prescriber has asked for a DHT level while they take a medicine that affects it.
Your report shows your DHT level against its reference range. DHT is easiest to read alongside total testosterone, so you may wish to test both. A result outside the range can prompt a repeat test or a talk with your GP.
