What this test is for
The DHEA sulphate (DHEAS) blood test measures one hormone made mainly by the adrenal glands. The body turns DHEAS into other hormones, including testosterone and oestrogen. Levels peak in early adulthood and fall slowly with age.
Women with irregular periods, acne or extra facial or body hair often check DHEAS alongside other hormones. It also suits men and women with low energy or libido, and anyone curious about their adrenal hormones. Samples can be taken by finger prick at home, in our Hull clinic or at a nurse visit.
Your report shows your DHEAS level against its reference range, which varies with age and sex. A high or low result is best read alongside testosterone and other hormones. It can prompt a repeat test or a talk with your GP.
