What this test is for
This cortisol blood test measures the level of cortisol, a hormone made by the adrenal glands above your kidneys. Cortisol helps manage blood sugar, blood pressure, the stress response and your sleep cycle. Levels are highest soon after waking and fall through the day.
People who feel run down, sleep poorly or live with long term stress often want to see their cortisol level. It also suits anyone whose GP or prescriber has suggested a check. You can use a finger prick kit at home, visit our Hull clinic or book a nurse visit.
Because cortisol changes through the day, take your sample early in the morning. Steroid medicines, including some creams and inhalers, can change the result, so note any you use. A level outside the range can prompt a repeat test, a look at sleep and stress, or a talk with your GP.
