Iron Check

What this test is for
The Iron Check measures ferritin, your body's iron stores, plus serum iron and total iron binding capacity (TIBC), which shows how much iron your blood can carry. It also includes hs-CRP, a marker of inflammation. Ferritin rises when there is inflammation, so hs-CRP helps show whether a ferritin result can be taken at face value.
Tiredness, breathlessness with exercise, a vegan or vegetarian diet, giving blood, running and heavy periods are all common reasons to check iron. It adds hs-CRP to the core iron markers, and you can test by finger prick at home.
Ferritin, iron, TIBC and hs-CRP each appear against a reference range. Low stores can prompt a look at diet or a talk with your GP, while a high ferritin with a raised hs-CRP may just need a repeat test once you are well. Speak to your GP before starting iron tablets.
