Blood Borne Viruses (BBV) Screen

A blood borne virus test looking at HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C in one sample. It suits healthcare workers, people with a new partner and those needing work checks.

What this test is for

The Blood Borne Viruses (BBV) Screen looks at markers for three viruses carried in blood. It measures HIV 1 and 2 antibodies with p24 antigen, a part of the virus, and hepatitis C antibodies. For hepatitis B, it checks surface antigen, core antibodies from past contact, and surface antibodies, which can show immunity from vaccination or past infection.

Healthcare workers, students on clinical courses and people starting a new relationship often choose it. It also suits anyone who needs results for work or has had a tattoo abroad.

There is a window period after infection when markers may not yet show, so a recent exposure may need a repeat test. A reactive result means a marker was found and needs further tests through your GP or a sexual health clinic. A low hepatitis B antibody level is best discussed with a clinician before any vaccine decision.
