The Random Glucose Test measures glucose, the main sugar in your blood, at the moment your sample is taken. Random means you do not need to fast first, so the result reflects what you have recently eaten and drunk.
It suits people who want a quick look at their blood sugar on a given day, perhaps alongside other tests. A single random glucose reading does not on its own show whether someone has diabetes. HbA1c, which reflects your average blood sugar over about three months, is the usual test for that question.
Food, stress and illness can all move a single reading, so one result is only a snapshot. Your report shows your glucose level against the reference range for a non fasting sample. A high reading can prompt a repeat test, an HbA1c test, or a talk with your GP.
