PSA Blood Test

A PSA blood test measuring prostate specific antigen, a protein made by the prostate. Useful for tracking a level over time. It is not a screening test for prostate cancer.

What this test is for

The PSA Blood Test measures prostate specific antigen, a protein made by the prostate, a small gland below the bladder. PSA is a tumour marker, but it is not a screening test for prostate cancer. Routine PSA testing is not offered on the NHS, except for some men with a known BRCA2 gene change.

It suits men who have been asked by a clinician to track their PSA, for example after a past raised result, and men who have talked through the pros and cons of testing with their GP. If you have urinary symptoms, such as needing to pass urine more often or a weak flow, please see your GP first.

Your report shows your level against the reference range. A raised PSA does not mean you have cancer. Infection, an enlarged prostate, recent ejaculation, cycling and hard exercise can all push it up. A normal PSA does not fully rule out prostate cancer either. If your result is raised, the usual next step is a repeat test and a talk with your GP.
