What this test is for
The Lp-PLA2 blood test measures lipoprotein associated phospholipase A2, an enzyme carried mostly on LDL cholesterol particles. It is linked to inflammation inside the walls of arteries. That is why some people add it to standard cholesterol results.
This is a specialist test, offered by request only. It is not part of the NICE guideline on cardiovascular risk assessment (NG238), so it suits people who have talked it through with a clinician or want extra detail. You can book it in our Hull clinic, by nurse visit or with a home kit.
Your report shows your Lp-PLA2 level against its reference range. It adds detail but does not replace standard measures such as cholesterol and blood pressure. A result outside the range is best discussed with your GP or the clinician who suggested the test.
