Homocysteine Blood Test

The Homocysteine Blood Test measures the level of homocysteine, an amino acid your body makes as it breaks down protein. B vitamins help clear it, so the level can reflect your diet and how your body uses these vitamins.

Those looking at heart health, people on a plant based diet who wonder about B vitamin intake, and anyone with a family history of heart problems may find it useful. The sample must be spun soon after it is taken, so it is only offered in our Hull clinic or at a nurse visit.

You will see your homocysteine level against the reference range. A raised level can be linked to low B vitamins, how well your kidneys work, or some medicines. It can prompt a look at diet, a repeat test or a talk with your GP.
