HbA1c Blood Test

An HbA1c blood test showing average blood sugar over two to three months. It suits anyone thinking about diabetes risk, and a finger prick kit is available.

What this test is for

The HbA1c Blood Test measures glycated haemoglobin, a marker of your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. Sugar in the blood sticks to haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells, and HbA1c shows how much has built up.

People with a family history of type 2 diabetes, those working on their weight, and anyone tracking a past result often choose it. No fasting is needed, and a finger prick kit lets you test at home.

Your result is given in mmol/mol and set against the reference range. Because it reflects weeks rather than one day, it is steadier than a one off glucose reading, which our HbA1c and Glucose Test adds. A result above the range can prompt a repeat test, changes to diet and activity, or a talk with your GP.
