CA125 Blood Test (Ovarian Tumour Marker)

The CA125 Blood Test (Ovarian Tumour Marker) measures CA125, a protein found on cells lining the pelvis, tummy and chest, including the ovaries. A tumour marker can be higher in some cancers, but also in many conditions that are not cancer. This is not a screening test for ovarian cancer. UK guidance uses CA125 for women who already have symptoms, not as a check for women who feel well.

It suits women who have been asked by a GP or specialist to track their CA125 level over time, for example after treatment. You can give a sample at our Hull clinic, with a nurse visit, or with a finger prick kit at home. If you have symptoms such as bloating that does not go away, feeling full quickly, pelvic or tummy pain, or needing to pass urine more often, please see your GP first.

Your report shows your CA125 level against its reference range. It can be raised for many reasons that are not cancer, including periods, pregnancy, endometriosis, fibroids, liver disease and inflammation. A normal result does not rule out ovarian cancer, so do not ignore symptoms that carry on. Share any result with your GP or the clinician monitoring you, who can compare it with earlier readings.
